Nixa Amateur Radio Club to Demonstrate Emergency Communications at Espy Elementary for ARRL Field Day

NIXA, MO -- June 24, 2026 -- Members of the Nixa Amateur Radio Club (NARC) will participate in the annual ARRL Field Day on June 27-28 at Espy Elementary School, located at 220 S Gregg Rd, Nixa, MO. The public is invited to attend, view the equipment, and experience firsthand how amateur radio functions completely independent of the commercial power grid, cell towers, and the internet.

The event kicks off on Saturday, June 27 at 1:00 PM and runs continuously for 24 hours, concluding on Sunday, June 28 at 1:00 PM.

ARRL Field Day is the single largest amateur radio exercise in North America, bringing together more than 35,000 operators across the U.S. This year’s theme, "Amateur Radio: A National Resource," highlights the critical role licensed “ham” radio operators play in modern community safety. When severe weather or unexpected disasters take down traditional communication lines, amateur radio operators step in to provide vital communication pipelines and situational awareness to emergency managers and first responders.

Promoting both emergency preparedness and community outreach, Field Day is a 24-hour event where amateur radio clubs across the country can test their equipment and skills, and introduce new people to the hobby. For those who haven't heard of ham radio before, it's not only a hobby, but also an emergency communication tool. Ham radio allows you to talk not only with people in your local area but also across the world!

Event Highlights Include:

  • Live Radio Operations: Watch club members use voice, Morse code (CW), and modern digital data modes to connect with thousands of other stations across the country.

  • Emergency Infrastructure Setup: See portable antennas and off-grid power setups.

  • Get On the Air (GOTA) Station: Visitors of all ages - even those without a ham radio license - can legally operate a high-frequency radio under the guidance of an experienced mentor.

Whether you are a tech enthusiast, curious about emergency preparedness, or looking for a unique family educational activity, the Nixa Amateur Radio Club welcomes everyone to stop by Espy Elementary during the 24-hour window. Attendance is entirely free, and no prior electronics or radio experience is required.
